Even though we think of FLOKATI RUGS as a throwback to 70s', they actually date back many centuries before that. The genuine articles are rugs that are HAND MADE from sheep's wool. The tradition began in the 5th century in Samarina (the highest village on the Pindos Mountains) in Greece, where many FLOKATI RUGS are still made today. Back then, shepherds used the heavy wool rugs to keep warm. Today, they help keep home heating costs down by providing a warm and cozy floor covering.

The FLOKATI RUG is not to be confused with a SHAGGY RUG, which is manufactured using virtually anything. A FLOKATI rug is made only with heavy sheep wool.

FLOKATI RUGS are lush, sexy & trendy....and a little bit kitchsy - in a good way. Some people hesitate to buy a FLOKATI RUG because of a concern of keeping the rug clean: they are in fact, quite EASY TO CLEAN and are easier and less expensive to clean than THICK woven wool rugs. Simply shake out the rug regularly (to remove dust and dirt particles) and hand or machine wash in COLD WATER, with a mild wool-appropriate soap (like WOOLITE). The only thing you don't want to do is vacuum the rug with a rotating vacuum head: the furry wool will get caught in the vacuum & destroy the rug! (sort of like vacuuming a cat... a practise WE DO NOT RECOMMEND :-)
